WEIGHT HANDICAPPING

One of the reasons that Winform has been more successful than most is the treatment of weights. I believe it is ludicrous that there are still handicappers today who believe that 1.5kg = 1 lengths in all cases.

To believe that a horse will not be effected more and more as the distance gets greater and less and less as the distance gets shorter is like believing in Santa Claus. Just because once a long time ago two horses raced and then raced again with a different weight and achieved such a result is not to say that the same would continue to occur ad infinitum.

To make a simple demonstration I suggest you try this. Put on your knapsack and fill it with house bricks. Now take a run around the oval. I’ll wait here while you try it. How was it? Did you notice that at first the weight didn’t seem a burden to you at all? What about after 200 or 300 metres? Are you feeling it now? And are you slowing down? Of course you don’t have Len Dittman on your back urging you on, but would it really make that much difference if you did?

The fact that weight becomes more of a burden as you travel over greater distances is obvious. My sliding scale of weight takes this into account. It is a tried and proven scale and although it can’t cover every circumstance it is far more effective than treating every distance as the same. Some horses will always defy any weight scale. These horses are known as champions.
